Empowered for Life – Strategy 2030

“Empowered for Life” is The Foundation’s new strategy and a commitment to supporting children and families in navigating serious illness and moving forward in life with strength, dignity, and quality of life.

Improving Life for Seriously Ill Children and Their Families

The Foundation works to improve the lives of seriously ill children and their families by supporting Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital in delivering world-class healthcare.

We support the children’s hospital with resources for investment in research, new technologies, and healing environments that embrace and strengthen both children and their families.

Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital is being realized through a partnership between the Capital Region of Denmark, Rigshospitalet, and the Ole Kirk Foundation. This unique public-private collaboration aims to create a pioneering hospital for children, teens, pregnant women, and their families.

The Foundation contributes specifically to strengthening and further developing the children’s hospital by supporting research, new technologies, and healing environments that promote the well-being of children and families during and after illness.

Our Areas of Support

We contribute to the development of hospital environments where play and a homely atmosphere are integrated, and where families can maintain everyday life

We support the development and investment in new technologies that ensure the best and most gentle treatment for children and teens

We contribute to research and education in highly specialized treatment for children and teens, as well as their well-being during and after illness

1

Improving Family Well-Being During Illness

When children and teens become seriously ill, the lives of their entire families are often put on hold. Daily life comes to revolve around practicalities and medical care.

We support Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital with resources to create healing environments designed to meet families’ needs for safety, play, and opportunities for growth.

2

Raising the Standard of Care for Children and Teens to World-Class Levels

Mary Elizabeth’s Hospital is a specialized children’s hospital serving all of Denmark, providing treatment, research, and innovation at the highest international standard.

At The Foundation, we support the development of new treatment options and the investment in advanced medical technology to ensure the best and most compassionate care possible.

3

Supporting the Transition from Hospital to Home to Ease Life After Treatment

When children are admitted to the hospital, their everyday lives are put on hold. School, friends, and social activities are interrupted, and many risk falling behind - both academically and socially. For many, this has significant consequences, and the challenges can continue long after the illness has passed.

At The Foundation, we work to help children and young people return to everyday life stronger and better prepared after completing their treatment.

4

Ensuring Health Equity for All Children and Young People

All children have the right to the best possible healthcare, care, and support - regardless of where they live or the illness they face. Today, some diagnoses and postal codes receive more attention and recognition than others, creating inequality for children and families who are already heavily impacted.

At The Foundation, we strive to be advocates for equal treatment for all children and for the protection of their rights in accordance with the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Three Development Tracks Toward 2030

We generate financial growth through strong partnerships with the aim of building a lasting endowment that can strengthen Denmark’s national children’s hospital in research, innovation, and the development of world-class treatment—for current and future generations.

We invest the foundation’s resources responsibly and strategically where the need is greatest. Through systematic prioritization and active follow-up, we ensure that the foundation’s initiatives create the greatest possible impact and contribute to the vision of improving the lives of seriously ill children and their families.

We take active responsibility as a catalyst by sharing knowledge, experience, and insights to ensure that effective and groundbreaking initiatives are disseminated for the benefit of children across the Danish Realm, and to foster global inspiration and knowledge exchange.

To be the best in the world requires something different from what we usually do. That we reach out. Think innovatively. And do it together.
